The "Emerging Leaders" program, spanning six months, dives deep into the art of coaching leadership, equipping participants with the tools to inspire and elevate their teams.
From starting as an Account Manager to now supervising a team, one of Chalmers' dedicated co-workers, Angela Duran, shares insights into the company culture, challenges and rewards of the insurance industry, and the support Chalmers offers. Let's hear her story.
Q: How did your journey at Chalmers begin, and where are you now?
A: I started at Chalmers as a Personal Lines Account Manager in March of 2019. Fast forward to today, and I'm now a Personal Lines Supervisor and Account Manager.
Q: What have been the milestones or turning points in your career here?
A: Being a part of and completing the Emerging Leaders class was significant for me. Then, there was the promotion to a supervisor role. I truly appreciate the leadership team we have.
Q: Can you tell us about the professional development opportunities Chalmers has given you?
A: The Emerging Leaders class has been instrumental. The tools from that class have helped me in both my professional and personal growth.
Q: How does Chalmers approach innovation and problem-solving?
A: Chalmers has “charter groups” developed for different projects. These groups collaborate to resolve issues and establish workflow and procedures.
Q: What challenges and invigorates you in your daily role?
A: Being promoted to supervisor has me feeling invigorated. I'm eager to learn the role and help my co-workers be their best selves. A current challenge, though, is the significant increase in insurance premiums.
Q: How have Chalmers' values supported your personal growth?
A: Chalmers' core values – Exceptional Client Service, Honesty, Involvement in the Community, and Passionate Professionalism – are values I believe in. Chalmers genuinely cares about you as a person and your growth, and they're committed to giving back to the local communities.
Q: Do you have a proud moment as a part of the Chalmers team you'd like to share?
A: I'm always proud to be part of Chalmers. But being awarded 2023 Best Places to Work in Insurance, being part of a 4th generation family-owned business, and delivering checks to the Gorham Backpack Program all make me extremely proud.
Q: How does the company support a work-life balance?
A: The hybrid work schedule is a fantastic balance. If personal situations arise, Chalmers is more than willing to accommodate. Plus, the early release Fridays during the summer, extended this year through October 6th, are a nice touch.
Q: Any personal pursuits outside of work that Chalmers supports?
A: I volunteer for the Gorham Backpack Program and have also volunteered at multiple Red Cross blood drives. I've also enjoyed cleaning up the Gorham community.
Q: For those who think insurance isn’t exciting, what would you say?
A: The insurance industry is ever-changing. You're always learning, with new companies coming on board and the chance to build relationships with clients and carrier partners. It's what you make it – make your own fun!
Q: Any advice for someone considering a career at Chalmers?
A: If you want to feel valued, appreciated, and respected, then Chalmers is for you. They truly care about their employees, and the senior leadership team is always there to listen and assist.
